CONTINUOUS LITHO PRINTING

Pre printed computer forms are time savers as they are easier to read and assimilate while dot matrix/impact printers are the most economical method of printing data on to forms.

Continuous/Web printing refers to the use of rolls (or “webs”) of paper supplied to the printing pres. Offset web printing is generally used for runs in excess of 5 or 10 thousand impressions. Typical examples of web printing include inserts/ads, computer forms, swing tickets, tags, full-colour letters and brochures. Most of our presses include UV drying for instant drying and high print quality, ideal for laser printing on both coated and uncoated papers.

Computer forms were a key string of our original DNA, and we now offer the largest range of forms sizes in South Africa.

Please consult our sales staff to explore the range of possibilities and benefits of using continuous forms.

COMPUTER FORMS – TECHNICAL INFORMATION

As computer forms are printed on a continuous web of paper the depth of a form is determined by the printing cylinder size. This is usually given in inches as it is based on the typewriter which spaced each line 1/6th of an inch apart on single spacing. (6 lines per inch). Common cylinder sizes are 17″ (432mm), 22″ (560mm) and 24″ (610mm). Forms are stepped up to give the following sizes;

Cylinder Size

17″

22″

24″

Possible Form Sizes

2×8 1/2″ (2x216mm) deep forms

6×3 2/3″ (6x102mm) or 4×5 1/2″ (4x140mm) or 3×7 1/3″ (3x186mm) or 2×11″ (2x280mm)

6×4″ (6x120mm) or 4×6″ (4x152mm) or 3×8″ (3x203mm) or 2×12″ (2x305mm)

Formsxpress can also supply forms in these additional non standard sizes:

7 1/2″ (190mm) 9″ (229mm) 10″ (254mm) and 12 1/2″ (317mm) and we can make special sizes on request.

In order of form depth the sizes in mm’s are 93, 102, 140, 152, 186, 190, 203, 216, 254, 280, 305 and 317mm.

The width of computer forms is variable up to 500mm wide. The most common width is 240mm which allows 80 characters spaced at 10 characters per inch to be printed on a standard 80 character printer.

Dot matrix impact printers can be programmed to print type in any size so the restraints of the typewriter no longer apply other than to the depth of the form.
